Anyone who registers a new domain name with a .com, .net, or .org extension (regardless of what web hosting provider one goes through) MUST pay the InterNIC fee. There is no way around this! When registering a new domain InterNIC usually will complete this task within 12-24 hours (for the past few months, InterNIC registration has been very swamped, so it's possible for it to take longer). However after this time period, it truly depends on ALL networks and ISPs of the world to update their servers and lookup your new domain name. Some popular dial-up ISPs (i.e. Earthlink, Slip.Net, Sprynet, Grid.Net) take less than 6 hours to update their servers, while others will take more than 3 days.
